Chen Wang receives first joint PhD degree with a Chinese university

On February 28, 2022, Chen Wang successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis "Discriminative metric learning for scene recognition based on deep features", and was awarded the joint degree of Doctor of Bioscience Engineering: Mathematical Modelling (Ghent University) and Doctor of Natural Science (Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi'an, China). The research was supervised by Bernard De Baets (Ghent University) and Guohua Peng (Northwestern Polytechnical University). Chen was the first joint PhD student at KERMIT affiliated with a Chinese university. Due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions, Chen defended her thesis at Northwestern Polytechnical University through MS Teams from Ghent University! The research of Chen was supported by the China Scholarship Council.
